Trace the water without climbing onto the roof
A ceiling stain does not establish a roof cause. Record discovery time, whether it was raining, and the affected rooms. Photograph from a safe position. Do not climb onto a wet roof to obtain a better claim image; leave access and technical inspection to a suitable professional.
Ask the business to distinguish the suspected entry route from observed damage. Was a tile displaced, a connection defective, or maintenance implicated? A description saying only roof leaks can leave the assessment unnecessarily unclear.
Retain earlier correspondence about the problem. A new mark can appear elsewhere within a longer sequence. You need not decide coverage yourself. Describe the history accurately and ask what can technically be established.
Repairing the roof is a separate item
List roof or connection repair separately from damaged belongings. A wet rug, curtain, or piece of furniture may belong on the possessions list, while the ceiling and structural parts require another assessment. Improvements can involve further definitions or interests.
Univé discusses the distinction between home and possessions in its water-damage explanation. Conditions may also separate remedying the cause from compensating consequences. Possible payment for a wet sofa does not establish that the complete roof repair qualifies.
Request an itemised quote. Temporary measures against further entry, permanent roof work, and curtain cleaning should not share one unexplained line. Note who instructed each business. In rented homes or apartments, clarify the landlord's or owners' association's role to avoid duplicate work orders.
Examine the event and limitations
Read relevant rain, storm, leakage, and exclusion clauses together. Heavy rain, a storm-damaged roof, and water through a defective connection are not automatically identical events. Interpolis handles precipitation separately and describes limitations in its own explanation. Use examples to formulate questions rather than assume your policy matches.
Identify confirmed findings and pending investigation in the notification. Add photographs of belongings and separate technical reports. Ask whether inspection is required before restoration covers the affected surfaces. Necessary safe damage limitation may not always wait, but its reason and cost should remain understandable.
Keep evidence attached to its purpose. Weather information gives context without proving the defect that admitted water. A roof photograph does not establish the value of interior belongings. Separating these functions makes the file more accurate and your questions more specific. Keep the original images as well as any labelled copies so later annotations do not replace the underlying record.
