A wet kitchen does not identify the cause

Water in front of the dishwasher shows where you noticed it, not necessarily where it originated. Record whether the machine was running, any displayed message, and the discovery time. A detached drainage hose differs factually from an internal fault or a connection that has leaked over an extended period.

Limit spreading water only where safe. Do not touch wet electrical components; obtain appropriate help for an unsafe situation. Report what has already been done. Ask the technician to describe the actual finding rather than supply a preferred insurance description. That finding is more useful than the broad label water damage.

Separate the repair items

Keep repairing the dishwasher distinct from damage caused by the escaping water. A damaged freestanding basket or wet rug should not appear under the same unexplained entry as a replacement pump. This makes fault-repair costs distinguishable from damaged possessions.

The kitchen can contain different insured interests too. A freestanding cupboard differs from fixed units or a structural floor. With an integrated dishwasher, examine the policy definition and ownership. Built-in or my kitchen does not by itself assign every item to one policy.

In rented homes or apartments, the landlord or owners' association may be involved with fixed parts. Explain what was affected and ask who coordinates investigation or repair. Include relevant agreements about improvements. You need not settle ownership definitively before notifying your own insurer of the event.

Make the file understandable

Take safe wider photographs and details of affected possessions. Show the route of the water where possible and note what was present before clearing up. A damaged cupboard door and its contents can be separate items even when they share one photograph.

Request an itemised quotation separating cause investigation, appliance repair, drying, and restoration. Retain invoices for necessary temporary measures. Ask what authorization is needed before permanent work and which components should be kept where safe.

Interpolis's own leak explanation identifies particular drainage-hose incidents and separate maintenance or wear exclusions. This illustrates why the precise event matters, rather than promising payment for every dishwasher leak. Compare the findings with the applicable wording and ask which clause is being used for each damage item. An organized cost breakdown helps that conversation without establishing cover on its own.
